It’s not uncommon for scammers to harvest “likes” for a Facebook account by promising free stuff. Another perfect example is the ghd hair straightener scam that’s currently making the rounds on the social media website.

“We have got 569 GHD Hair straighteners that can't be sold because they have been unsealed. Therefore we are giving them away for free. Want a pair? Just Share this photo & Like our page then we will choose 569 people completely at random on 20th March,” the scam posts read, according to Hoax Slayer.

Fortunately, there’s no malware or other shady pieces of software involved in this scam. However, such bogus giveaways could seriously damage a company’s reputation.

On the other hand, users should always avoid unverified giveaways, since some of them might require more than a “like” from victims.

Ghd Australia is aware of the scam, which helped the fraudsters harvest over 70,000 likes for their Facebook page.

The company advises users to purchase products only from the official website or from approved retailers.
