ODiN can be a very good alternative to your average mouse

Kickstarter is often home for a lot of innovative ideas, and many important companies like Pebble have crowdfunded their original products using the platform.

While searching for fresh approaches to technology in the extensive database, we came across ODiN, an odd-looking cube that aims to change the experience you usually expect to have when using a computer and a mouse.

This square box is actually a mouse

The team who created ODiN claims this is the world’s first projection mouse. It’s a portable gadget that can fit just right in your hand. What you do is put it on your desk and it will project an outline of the mouse right on your table.

From there, the “projection mouse” will work like any regular trackpad would. On top of that, ODiN supports a host of gestures that will allow users to perform common actions such as scrolling, zooming in and out, going forward and back in the OS or browser.

However, if you like feeling the physical mouse in your hand, you’ll probably have a quite hard time adjusting to ODiN. But in scenarios where you need a portable mouse for your laptop or an alternative trackpad, ODiN is quite perfect for the job.

ODiN pays tribute to Norse mythology

There’s an interesting side story to ODiN, too. The team that created the mouse was inspired by Nordic mythology. For those of you who don’t know, Odin is the main god in the Nordic god Parthenon (like Zeus is for the Greeks).

The laser beams coming out of the mouse are projected as lightning, alluding at the legendary Norse god throwing his spear. A triangle which is often used in Runic alphabets is incorporated in the virtual pad design, suggesting strength and courage.

The team behind ODiN says that their mouse should appeal to everyone who feels their arm or wrist gets tired or even hurt after holding the traditional mouse for a very long time. With the new mouse, users shouldn’t have such problems at all.

The ODiN mouse comes in three colors, including metal green, bright silver and charcoal black, and if you’re an early bird, you can pick one for as little as $49 / €45.
