At less than a month since Bob Muglia announced his departure from Microsoft, the company has named a replacement in the person of Satya Nadella. A 19-year Microsoft veteran, Nadella has been promoted from the position of Senior Vice President to that of President of the company’s $15 billion Server and Tools Business (STB).

Back in the first half of January 2011, Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer noted that he had decided it was time for a change at the top of the STB division and that he was considering possible replacements from both inside and outside of the software giant.

It appears that Ballmer settled on promoting internally, now that Nadella will be at the helm of the Server and Tools Business.

“We’re already making strong traction across our Server and Tools Business by embracing cloud services,” Ballmer said.

“Satya has deep experience in both our server business and online services, which will help accelerate our momentum while setting the course to deliver the cloud computing scenarios of the future,” he added.

Nadella will have until mid-2011 to settle in in his new role with the Redmond company.

Although Muglia announced that he was leaving the software giant last month he will continue to work for Microsoft at least until the summer of 2011, helping with the transition of the new President of Server and Tools Business.

“Our server and tools business is one of the fastest growing and most profitable businesses at Microsoft,” Nadella stated.

“I see great opportunity for Microsoft to grow the business and also lead the way in the transformation of enterprise IT. I’m excited to work with such a high-caliber team to chart the path for our continued success today and growth in the future.”
