Toshiba unveils a new laptop for children

Apparently content with how many mainstream and high-end mobile PCs it has, Toshiba has entered a partnership of sorts with BestBuy for the marketing of the Satellite L635 Kids' PC, a 13.3-inch laptop aimed exclusively at children.

The new laptop that Toshiba intends to send out has a price in the same league as that of a netbook but does not exactly stick to a netbook's specifications.

Instead of being powered by Intel's Pine Trail platform, the Atom CPUs as it were, the company went for the Celeron P4600.

This CPU has a clock speed of 2 GHz and is backed up by 2 GB of RAM, so as to allow the various pre-loaded software to run smoothly.

The configuration also boasts a hard disk drive with a storage capacity of 250 GB, plus a DVD drive and a no-gloss Dura-corss textured finish with resistance to fingertips, as well as a wipeable keyboard.

“The laptop has traditionally been a device conceived and built for adults, and devices currently being marketed to kids are either netbooks or toy-based computers,” said Jeff Barney, vice president and general manager, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Digital Products Division.

“As a result of this collaboration with Best Buy, we have made a product that provides the right measure of fun and entertainment for children while meeting the computing needs and security concerns of their parents,” he added.

“People today expect well thought out laptop offerings customized to meet their expectations, and partnering with Toshiba makes it possible,” said Jason Bonfig, vice president of computing at Best Buy.

“We set out to design a laptop that better serves the function and content needs of families, and the result was the Satellite L635 Kids’ PC,” Bonfig went on to saying.

Set to become available on September 26, the 13.3-inch Toshiba Satellite L635 Kids' PC will have a price tag of $499 and will sell exclusively through BestBuy.

Its maker even pre-loaded the machine with the NetNanny parental controls, as well as various children's games.
