SaskTel's HTC Incredible S smartphone is about to receive its long-awaited Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread software upgrade.

Although the phone was launched back in April, it appears that the regional carrier was not among HTC's preferred carriers for distributing the Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread for the Incredible S.

Bell was the last Canadian carrier to deploy this upgrade for Incredible S and this happened a few months ago.

Anyway, those who didn't root their smartphones and waited for the carrier's Gingerbread release will be able to flash the update starting today.

The update is pushed OTA (over the air), so Incredible S owners might want to check for the software manually by going to Settings / About Phone / System software updates and select Check now.

It is possible that the update will not show up, in which case it's better to wait for the carrier's notification or check again later.

Some of the new features and improvements introduced by Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread are detailed below:

- New on-screen keyboard – standard keyboard greatly improves cut and paste feature and intuitive typing for faster input; - Streamlined user interface – new color schemes and interface changes make Android simpler to use; - Application and power management – Android 2.3 will provide clients the ability to monitor and manage running applications.

Also, new Downloads application will allow clients to control stored downloads from the browser, email and other apps.

There are no further details about the update at this time, but it appears that SaskTel will deploy another software upgrade by the end of the year.

According to the latest hearsay, the carrier plans to bring HTC Incredible S to the latest Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread before Google launches the next-generation Ice Cream Sandwich, but the information has yet to be confirmed.

Stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
