From comparisons to cartoon villains to accusations of cultural appropriation, her outfit doesn’t fail to get a reaction

Sarah Jessica Parker often says that she’s not to be confused with her fashion icon alter ego Carrie Bradshaw from “SATC” because she’s neither as fashionable nor as funny as she is. Even so, she still puts in the effort to live up to that image.

Each year, she comes out for the MET Gala and makes sure she is one of the most outstanding presences on the red carpet, respecting the theme of the evening without fail - perhaps even more than many other attendees.

Most of the times, this means that her outfits are the most outrageous and memorable, just like it also happened last night, at this year’s edition.

SJP and the Philip Treacy “Flame” headpiece

You can find photos of SJP’s getup in the gallery below: she clearly put a lot of thought and time into the outfit, which feels more like a costume than anything else. Still, it’s memorable and it respects the theme of the night (“China: Through the Looking Glass”), it’s glamorous and out of the ordinary.

The off-the-shoulder dress is actually an H&M piece she designed herself; the backside actually ends in a cape, which SJP decorated with countless poppies, and the skirt features a thigh-high slit that allowed for ample movement.

She accessorized with shoes from her own line, the SJP Collection, a Fendi bag and designer jewelry. The cherry on top of this entire getup was obviously the flaming headpiece, which is actually called “Flame” and was created by Philip Treacy.

Fashion watchers believe that this piece was a bit of overkill and that she would have looked better with a smaller one, but reactions from industry peers to SJP’s number are mostly positive.

Just don’t go on Twitter to read more about it.

SJP’s flaming headpiece becomes a meme

Much like Rihanna and her giant yellow cape-dress, Sarah’s flaming headpiece became a meme within minutes of her walking the red carpet and up those stairs.

Most people had fun comparing her to cartoon characters, mostly villains, or characters from TV shows and big screen comedies. If we’re to believe what people are saying online, SJP could have gotten her inspiration for this outfit from countless places, and not one of them is Chinese tradition.

Of course, there are also voices accusing her of cultural appropriation, but they are fewer by comparison. People are mostly amused that she would wear something this outrageous in public and not be attending a masquerade ball.

Here are some samples of the things people said about SJP and her flaming headpiece.
