The CE52SR1 model

Waterproof TVs have always exerted quite a high level of fascination with most people, especially since they are traditionally associated with a certain social status (after all, not everyone can afford such an expensive product). So, imagine our surprise when we've come across one of Sanyo's latest announcements (made at InfoComm 2008, in Las Vegas), namely the CE52SR1 Waterproof, Weather Resistant, 52-inch wide LCD monitor.

First of all, it's important to mention the fact that, even if we're dealing with a device that will most likely be used especially for digital signage purposes, the CE52SR1 delivers full HD resolution (1920 by 1080 pixels) and a 1500:1 contrast ratio at a very good response time (just 6.5 ms). The screen is also sun-readable, while the brightness level (1500 cd/m2), will ensure the fact that users will be able to view what's happening on the display even in direct sunlight.

Since this LCD TV will most likely be installed in public spaces of venues, it offers the ability to combine up to 25 units (maximum 5x5 configuration) from a single input signal. Additional connectivity options include DVI-D (HDCP), D-Sub 15, Component (Y,Pb,Pr) / RGBHV, BNC and S-Video inputs, as well as stereo mini-jack and analog audio inputs and an analog audio output.

However, the true main selling point this device has to offer is represented by the fact that the CE52SR1 is highly resistant to typical weather conditions, due to its impressive IP-66 rating. The Ingress Protection, or IP, rating is quite well-earned, since the protection of the device is so substantial that CE52SR1 can withstand low-pressure jets of water sprayed directly on the front glass.

Furthermore, the frame and cabinet of the new device from Sanyo are constructed from a marine grade anodized aluminum and feature a "no holes" ventilation system, allowing the LCD monitor to stay cool while being protected from dust and various weather conditions. Additionally, the CE52SR1 is outfitted with a tough, tamper-resistant anti-reflection cover glass, which makes the monitor highly suitable for use in well-trafficked public areas as well as in almost any kind of unprotected outdoor location.

Last, but certainly not least, let's talk about size and pricing. As expected, this is not exactly a very slim product, measuring 1304 x 800 x 234.5 mm at a weight of around 83.5 kilos. Additionally, it's also extremely expensive, since the would-be customers will have to cough up around 14,000 US dollars in order to get their hands on one of these babies when they become available at some point in October.
