Video shows a scary-looking Santa pleading that people save his home in the Arctic

Santa Claus has recently announced that, unless world leaders get their act together and move to protect the Arctic from companies that want to drill for oil in these frozen waters, he will be left with no choice except cancel Christmas.

There will be no more presents, and definitely no more joy and goodwill for all, Santa warns.

In a video, Santa Claus explains that, because of climate change and global warming, his home in the Arctic is slowly melting away. Hence, neither he nor his elves can go about their business as they have for decades.

“Dear children, regrettably, I bring bad tidings. For some time now, melting ice here at the North Pole has made our operations and our day-to-day life intolerable and impossible and there may be no alternative but to cancel Christmas,” Santa says.

“My home in the arctic is fast disappearing. And unless we all act urgently, then I have to warn you of the possibility of an empty stocking forevermore. Please help me,” he adds.

The video showing Santa threatening to cancel Christmas is made available to you at the end of this article.

It was pieced together by environmentalists working with Greenpeace, and is part and parcel of a new campaign intended to convince world leaders to ban drilling in the Arctic.

The campaign, dubbed Save Santa's Home, aims to convince people to sign a petition urging world leaders to quit supporting the use of fossil fuels and turn to promoting renewables instead. Besides, the organization is asking that a sanctuary be created around the North Pole.

“If you sign up you will be joining Vivienne Westwood, Jude Law, Paul McCartney and Madonna in helping create a sanctuary around the North Pole. This would leave Santa in peace to spread joy around the world on Christmas Day,” Greenpeace explains.

Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas might be one very gloomy movie, but this Greenpeace video is likely to strike folks as darker, maybe even depressing.

This is because the Santa featured in it looks nothing like the one people have grown accustomed to seeing in malls or on Christmas postcards.

Not to beat about the bush, this Santa looks as if he's been sleeping in the gutter for at least a couple of weeks, and as if he hadn't tasted food for even longer.

According to The Blaze, Greenpeace's Santa is played by actor Jim Carter. If he's face and voice seem familiar, this is because the actor plays Mr. Carson on hit TV show “Downton Abbey.”
