Coffee Stain Studios and Reverb Publishing have confirmed that Sanctum, the nifty hybrid between a tower defense strategy game and a first person shooter, will be getting a sequel next year, which will appear on the PC, just like its predecessor, but also on consoles like the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

Sanctum impressed quite a lot of people with its peculiar gameplay, allowing players to set up their towers in a first person view and then participate in the actual defense process with their own weapons.

The game proved to be quite successful, managing to sell over 300,000 copies on the PC.

Coffee Stain Studios, its developer, and Reverb Publishing, its publisher, have now confirmed to Joystiq that a sequel is in full development.

"Sanctum has been a huge success on Steam for Coffee Stain Studios, and bringing the next version to console players as well as the PC market is a great next step to share this unique experience," said Ted Lange, executive producer for Reverb Publishing. "We all have logged quite a few hours with Sanctum and can definitively say that what Coffee Stain has in store for Sanctum 2 will blow the minds of Sanctum fans and new gamers alike."

What’s more, besides a PC release, just like the first Sanctum, the sequel will also be made available on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, via their digital distribution services, the Sony Entertainment Network and the Xbox Live Marketplace, respectively.

While no actual details are known about the upcoming Sanctum 2, the two companies did confirm that it would be made available in 2013.

In case you haven’t had a chance to try out the first Sanctum, then you might want to check out Valve’s Steam digital distribution service, as it’s been discounted by 66%, meaning you can get it for just $3.39 or €3.39.
