IT appears that SanDisk has more than one product line to show, though the second one is of the same type as the X100 solid state drives revealed not long ago.

The second product collection that the company has officially introduced this week bears the name of SanDisk Extreme SSD.

As the name implies, the product series is optimized for high performance, reliability and energy efficiency.

“Computer wait times are becoming a thing of the past thanks to SSDs,” said Kent Perry, director, product marketing, SanDisk.

“Our SanDisk Extreme SSD delivers virtually instant boot and shutdown times along with faster application launches. It’s a huge improvement to the computing experience.”

The SanDisk Extreme SSD line is rated as ten times faster than hard drive units with platter speed of 7,200 RPM (rotations per minute).

On that note, the read speed of 550 MB/s and the writing speed of up to 520 MB/s leave little doubt as to whether or not this is true.

For the sake of comparison, the X100 line of SSDs for regular notebooks and desktop computers work at 500 MB/s and 420 MB/s, respectively.

That said, with their higher specs, the Extreme SSD models are intended for games, especially those where in-game delays must be minimal and environments need to be generated fast (MMORPGs, for example).

For those who want more specs, the random write Input-Output Operations Per Second (IOPS) is of up to 83,000, while the random read IOPS is 44,000.

Finally, the newcomers operate on 30% less power than HDDs, while producing less heat and no noise. As such, laptops will benefit from their use the most.

The SATA III drives have capacities of 129 GB and 240 GB and should already be up for sale at $189.99 (144.27 Euro) and $399.99 (303.73 Euro), respectively. As for a 480 GB member, it will be available in a few months, for $749.99 (569.51 Euro).
