SanDisk has just announced the introduction of the Ultra series of solid state drives, which are designed to come as a quick upgrade path for users wanting to get more performance out of their laptop or desktop systems.
SanDisk's new
SSD line comprises three drive models, which offer 60GB, 120GB and 240GB of storage capacity and use the SATA II (3Gbps) interface to connect to the system.
According to the manufacturer, this enables them to reach sequential read and write speeds of 280MB/s and 270MB/s respectively.
As usual, the maximum transfer rates achieved will vary according to the capacity of the drive, as the speeds advertised by the manufacturer are reached using the faster 240GB SSD, which has all the memory channel available from the
controller populated with NAND Flash.
The 60GB SanDisk Ultra SSD can withstand at least 40 terabytes of data written to it over its lifetime, while the 120GB and 240GB drives can withstand at least 80 terabytes and 120 terabytes of data written, respectively.
The rest of the specification sheet lists an active power consumption of 0.43 Watts, while MTBF is estimated at 1.0 million hours.
"Replacing a computer's hard disk drive with the
SanDisk Ultra SSD is more cost effective than buying a new PC," said Kent Perry, director, product marketing, SanDisk.
"Our new SSD delivers greater speed and reliability than a hard disk drive at an affordable price," concluded the company's rep.
Pricing starts at $129.99 for the 60GB drive, which will become available in August. The larger 120GB and 240GB solid state drives have an MSRP of $219.99 and $449.99 respectively.
Consumers in the United States can order the drives now from online retailers such as Newegg, where the 120GB SannDisk Ultra SSD is sold for $40 below MSRP.
