The International CES 2008 is only a few days away and manufacturers have started to come out with press releases of what they will be showcasing at their booths in Las Vegas. And one of the most interesting devices related to the specific area of portable storage devices comes from SanDisk,
who has just announced the Cruzer Titanium Plus, a USB flash drive that offers automatic online backup for every file copied to the drive.

The Cruzer Titanium Plus, which has a capacity of four gigabytes, is the first flash memory product from SanDisk to offer online backup. Users get the best of both worlds, with access online and offline, because the data is always available when Cruzer Titanium Plus is plugged into any computer. Moreover, the drive has a sturdy, metallic casing, which provides a higher level of protection for the data stored within.

Setting up the automatic-backup service is also pretty easy, since all the users have to do is open a personal password-protected online account. Whenever the user copies the files onto the drive, they're also automatically backed-up online. However, if the computer isn't online when files are copied to the drive, the backup will take place automatically the next time there is an Internet connection. Cruzer Titanium Plus even helps protect the user against accidentally deleting important files, because the files deleted from the drive by mistake can be easily recovered by signing into the online backup account.

"This is true 'set it and forget it' data protection. Many users have told us they worry about losing their data, and now SanDisk is reducing that anxiety through an innovative new form of online backup," said Hezy Rotman, vice president and general manager of SanDisk's USB Division. "We believe Cruzer Titanium Plus will encourage people to use flash drives for storing important data, not just transferring files from one computer to another."

The online backup service for Cruzer Titanium Plus is powered by BeInSync, while the actual online storage is provided by Amazon Web Services, a subsidiary of Amazon.com. The Cruzer Titanium Plus is expected to be available in the United States in March, with manufacturer suggested retail prices of $59.99. Although the first six months of the online backup service will be free, users will then have to fork out around $29.99 per year on the future, which is not a very small price, but, then again, the security of one's data does come at a price.
