Rumors on the upcoming release of the first Samsung smartphones powered by Tizen OS emerged months ago, but the South Korean company did not make any promises regarding the phones' availability.

Although we initially thought that Samsung would test the market with a single device that would be launched sometime this year, new info has just surfaced pointing to multiple Tizen-based devices being released in 2013.

The South Korean handset maker confirmed for Bloomberg that this year it would launch, backed by Intel, more than one smartphone powered by Tizen operating system.

“We plan to release new, competitive Tizen devices within this year and will keep expanding the lineup depending on market conditions,” a Samsung official said.

In the same piece of news, Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun claims that Samsung has already decided to launch a Tizen-based device at Mobile World Congress 2013, which will be available in Japan via NTT Docomo later this year.

No additional details on the exact release date and pricing options have been disclosed yet, but we expect more info to leak in the following weeks. Stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
