Samsung already has dual-core smartphones on the market, along with the largest smartphone ever made and the most advanced Google phone to date, but it seems that the company plans on rising the stake even more next year with the launch of their first smartphone to pack a flexible display. The handset vendor is set to make the first such device available for purchase as soon as next year, and has already confirmed plans on the area.

The info came out during the conference Samsung held for announcing its financial results for the third quarter of the ongoing year.

“The flexible display, we are looking to introduce sometime in 2012, hopefully the earlier part. The application probably will start from the handset side,” spokesman Robert Yi said during the company's earnings call, PCWorld reports.

Yi also confirmed that the company will bring to the market tablets and other mobile devices featuring flexible displays, but did not offer a specific time frame for these.

Samsung has already showcased flexible displays this year, and even said that it will include them inside new commercial products, but nothing was confirmed on the availability of such devices before.

What Samsung unveiled to the world included flexible OLED (organic light emitting diode) displays that were packed inside rigid cases to keep them curved.

Apparently, the company had included material within each pixel, thus making the technology more suitable for the flexible displays that future handsets will include.

What remains to be seen is whether the handsets will be flexible as a whole or not, the same as Nokia's prototype showcased at Nokia World was.

Samsung already packed curved displays inside some of its latest devices, the most popular of which is the Nexus S, and might consider making new devices that can easily bend, for example.

Unfortunately, we do not have a specific release date for these Samsung handsets with flexible displays, but the company might be set to unveil more on the matter soon, so stay tuned to learn the news.
