Samsung has unveiled a new line of storage products, the F1 RAID Class 3.5" SATA hard drive, with a total capacity of 1 TB. The new product offers world's highest recording density and uses three platters
only. The disk spins at 7,200 rotations per minute and is designed for enterprise storage or surveillance applications, such as close-circuit television systems. The high capacity drive is fast enough for other rapid applications, such as email servers, web servers, database, data warehousing, or backup storage systems.

"Demand for storage capacity continues to grow at an annual rate of nearly 60 percent and high capacity disk drives are increasingly being deployed in data centers to meet this demand," said John Rydning, research manager for hard disk drives at IDC. "Samsung's new F1R with 1TB of capacity on three platters offers enterprise customers an attractive combination of capacity and features for this growing segment."

Samsung's new disk features the newest technology. The company has worked on the recording stability for the Perpendicular Magnetic Recording technology. Another worth mentioning feature is the full-extent dynamic Flying-On-Demand (FOD) control that improves the read/write sensitivity by dynamically lowering the fly-height in read or write mode while maintaining a consistent and higher fly-height across the disk in standard mode.

"The dramatic increase in digital content is driving the need for greater storage capacity across the board," said Andy Higginbotham, director of hard drive sales and marketing, Samsung Storage System Division. "With our new F1R, we are entering the enterprise marketplace in full force by offering best-in-class performance and low power consumption."

The Spinpoint F1R comes with a 334GB per-platter capacity, a 7200RPM spindle speed, and a 32MB cache. The disk features a rotational vibration controller (RVC) that increases the disk's tolerance to vibration, while the system-on-chip controller takes care of minimizing power consumption at no performance cost.

Samsung's new line of hard-drives will be available by the end of this quarter, but there is no word on pricing yet.
