Samsung’s very own drop test has now been released

A few days ago, the folks responsible for the whole #bendgate scandal (Square Trade) extended the test performed originally on the Apple iPhone 6 Plus to the new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and HTC One M9.

The tests have shown that the new Galaxy S6 Edge tends to bend under the same amount of weight (110 lbs / 49 kg) as the iPhone 6 Plus. But interestingly enough, the Edge’s curved display proved to be quite prone to breakage.

The test also showed that it took up to 149 lbs / 67 kg to completely break Samsung’s new gizmo, while the Apple iPhone 6 Plus proved to be more rugged and capable of bearing 179 lbs / 81 kg.

Well, Samsung didn't take too kindly to these results and felt compelled to issue an official statement on this matter accompanied by a video discussing the #bendgate tests.

For starters, Samsung highlights that 110 lbs / 49 kg will rarely fall on a smartphone in real life and explains that the 66 lbs / 29 kg threshold is more plausible.

The Korean tech giant reveals that the S6 and S6 Edge have been tested to successfully endure the pressure of up to 79 lbs / 35 kg. We’re also told that the phones will have varying degrees of durability on their front and back.

Samsung wants to show you the Galaxy S6 Edge is not bound to break

It seems that Samsung is continuing its campaign for promoting the Galaxy S6 Edge as a sturdy device with a video quite similar to the one that was released following the Galaxy Note 4’s launch.

In the clip, both Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are released in a free fall from chest height, and while their fronts/backs hit the ground, they continue to run unharmed.

To prove that the edges of the Galaxy S6 Edge are not so fragile, Samsung drops the handset on its side as well, and “luckily” the phone survives that challenge too.

Samsung explains that it has designed the phone so that the first thing that hits the ground is the sturdy aluminum frame. On top of that, the insides are arranged in such a manner as to share the amount of stress and limit the damage, the company says.
