South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics has been long rumored to plan the launch of a 64-bit mobile processor, and confirmation on the matter appears to have already emerged.

A commit in the Linux kernel source unveils added support for the Samsung Exynos 64-bit quad-core ARMv8 GH7 system-on-a-chip, as chocoberry.pe.kr has discovered.

As Sammy Today notes, this is the first time that the commit was spotted (it was made on February 11, 2014).

Previous reports suggested that Samsung might be ready to bring 64-bit smartphones to the market as soon as this year, though the company hasn’t provided specific info on the matter as of now.

However, considering the fact that rival companies are also expected to adopt the technology in the not too distant future, the handset vendor might unveil more on its plans on the matter soon.
