Samsung is reportedly gearing up for the release of their first quad-core application processor for the smartphone market, and rumor has it that the new chip will arrive on the market as Exynos 4412.

Following the release of a new dual-core application processor, namely Exynos 4212, the handset vendor has published a series of details that hint at the upcoming quad-core CPU.

Exynos 4212 is a dual core ARM Cortex-A9 processor that features a clock speed of 1.5GHz, and the code that Samsung published on the Kernel Git page is implying that Samsung is working on the Exynos 4412 SoC as well, and that it will pack it with four cores.

The upcoming processor will still be an ARM Cortex A9 and will feature the same 1.5GHz clock speed, it seems.

Next year, the mobile phone maker is expected to launch its third-gen Galaxy S smartphone, the Galaxy S III, and chances are that the said CPU will power this device.
