South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung and United States-based wireless carrier AT&T are gearing up to announce something new for the US market as soon as May 5th, during a press event thaty would take place in New York City. The two already sent out invitations to the said event, but did not offer specific info on what might be unveiled.

However, some suggest that we might see a new mobile phone being brought to the market on the airwaves of this wireless carrier.

Chances are that the event would be centered around the new Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone, which runs under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.

The mobile phone arrives on shelves with quad-band UMTS 3G support, which might make it fit for AT&T airwaves, though this is only a wild guess for the time being.

According to the guys over at Pocketnow, however, there are several clues that point at this possible unveiling.

Among them, there is the Wi-Fi Alliance certification for a SGH-I927 handset, which sports specs similar with those of Galaxy S II.

Basically, this would make the said device a great candidate for the North American flavor of the new flagship phone. What should be noted here is that AT&T might not be the only wireless carrier to bring this device to the US.

Moreover, they suggest that the handset could sport one of the following three names: Attain, Function, and Within, but that there is no info available on which of them might actually arrive at AT&T.

Recent trademark filings from Samsung pointed at the said names, though it's uncertain whether the company would plan on using them for smartphones or not.

The said event has been scheduled for 4 p.m. on May 5, and all the necessary info on the matter would emerge at that time, so stay tuned to learn more on this.
