South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics was the first to make official a smartphone that sports a curved, flexible display, and it seems that the company plans more similar devices for the not too distant future.

Furthermore, a patent application listing unveils that Samsung is planning to up the ante with the new device, and to develop it with a screen wrapped around the edges.

As UnwiredView notes, the handset could sport lock/unlock sliders and battery/charge indicators on a side screen that could be kept always-on, in addition to other appealing functionality.

For example, should the phone indeed arrive on shelves, it would allow navigation through photo gallery via touch and tilt gestures, while also featuring navigation menu for the address book on the side.

Compared to what smartphones can offer today, the idea seems more than appealing, that’s for sure. However, it remains to be seen how fast the company will bring it to fruition.
