In the 3-month period ended April 2010

According to a new report from comScore, Inc., covering the three-month period ending April 2010, the leading mobile phone maker in the US market was Samsung, which accounted for 22.1 percent of the market. Moreover, the report, which was aimed at the mobile subscribers market, shows that Verizon Wireless was the leader in the carrier area, with market share of 31.1 percent.

When it comes to mobile original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Samsung was followed by LG with 21.8 percent share, while Motorola was placed on the third position, with 21.6 percent share, down 1.3 percentage points. RIM (8.4 percent share) and Nokia (8.1 percent share) came in on the fourth and fifth positions. The new report from comScore showed that 234 million Americans age 13 and older were mobile subscribers during the 3 month-period ending April 2010.

On the wireless carriers side, the US market was led by Verizon with 31.1 percent of mobile subscribers, followed by AT&T with 25.2 percent market share (marking a 0.2 percentage points increase from the three-month period ending January 2010). Sprint came in on the third spot, with 12.0 percent market share, while T-Mobile followed it closely with about the same market share. The fifth place went to Tracfone with 5.1 percent share.

The comScore report focused on other areas of interest as well, including the most popular activities and content that was accessed by users via their mobile phones. Thus, the data collected during the time frame shows that 64.6 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers used text messages on their handsets, or that 31.1 percent of them used browsers on the device. Applications were downloaded by 29.8 percent of the mobile subscribers, while social networking sites were accessed by 19.9 percent of mobile subscribers in the United States. All these activities enjoyed growing usage when compared to the period ended January 2010.
