A little bit earlier than it was expected, Sprint started to roll out the long anticipated Samsung Transform slider. The Android smartphone is an update to the "old" Samsung Moment and it was officially announced at the CTIA 2010 event, held in San Francisco.

The announcement coincides with the release of Sprint ID, a user-friendly new means of personalizing Android phones.

“Samsung Mobile is proud to offer consumers a phone that is truly customizable to fit the personality and style of everyone to make this handset as unique as they are,” said Omar Khan, chief strategy officer for Samsung Mobile.

“Samsung Transform is a powerful Android device, complete with front-facing camera, that takes the mobile experience to the next level with a full suite of features and the personalization options available from Android and the new Sprint ID service,” added Khan.

Feature-wise Samsung Transform comes with a 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen display, full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 3.2-megapixel camera with flash and video recording capabilities, as well as VGA front-facing camera for video-calls.

The Transform is powered by a 800 MHz processor and runs on the Android 2.1 platform, which is scheduled for an upgrade to 2.2 later this year.

It allows access to social networking sites Facebook, Flickr, and Twitter. With access to Sprint Zone, Samsung Transform evolves into a one-stop source to access the customer’s wireless account, phone tips, news, a list of top apps, Sprint TV, NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile and Sprint Music Plus.

Other key features of the Android smartphone include: GPS with AGPS support, Stereo Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP, Wi-Fi capability, 256 RAM, 512MB ROM, microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB, 2GB micro SD card included).

Even though the device was announced a little bit earlier, customer can begin to purchase the Transform October 10 through all Sprint channels, as well as national retail partners RadioShack and Best Buy.

The price tag was set to $149.99 with 2-year service agreement and after a $100 mail-in-rebate (taxes excluded) with a new line activation or eligible upgrade.
