Samsung hasn't released just Series 7 products, but also a Series 9 monitor that, according to its maker, incorporates the best that the company has to offer in monitors.

“The best” is a term subject to interpretation, but if Samsung itself says it then at least the intention to make it best-in-class exists.

A look at the specifications of the S27A970 monitor apparently lives up to the lofty expectations that such a bold claim sets.

The resolution of the 27-inch product is the first thing that stands out, even though Samsung seems to hold the Natural Color Expert technology in higher regard.

The PLS panel has a native resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels.

For those interested in the Natural Color Expert technology, it is supposed to provide “a richer viewing experience for discerning consumers working with photos and video content.”

The brightness of the monitor is 300 cd/m2, while the static contrast ratio is 1000:1.

Furthermore, the response time is of 5ms and the viewing angles of 178 degrees, both vertically and horizontally.

Other specifications include USB connectivity, HDMI, dual-link DVI, DisplayPort, MHL (Mobile high Definition Link) and two 7W speakers.

“Interest in user-generated content and a premium computing experience is growing as consumers are demanding products that allow them to better view, edit and share their photos, videos and entertainment content,” said Todd Bouman vice president of product marketing at Samsung Enterprise Business Division.

“The new Series 9 monitor, with Samsung’s exclusive Natural Color Expert technology, answers a need for higher resolution for meticulous detail editing, regardless of the job. Its unique minimalist design draws users in for truly immersive computing and delivers Samsung’s signature best-in-class viewing experience.”

Obviously, this item will be on display between January 10 and 13, 2012, in Las Vegas, Nevada (that is where CES takes place every year).

I hate the way monitor makers have abandoned all aspect ratios other than 1.77777 (ie., 1920 / 1080). An aspect ratio that is good for a TV is terrible for a monitor connected to a computer. Computer monitors need more vertical screen space for menubars, status bars, task bars, and tool bars - things that take up a huge part of the top and bottom of your display and leave little room in between for the documents you are working on. A better resolution for Samsung's monitor would be something like 2560 x 1920.

I can not concur with you more.
This is the first place I've seen someone raise this issue. It's like the industry is assuming that everyone is using their monitors to watch widescreen movies. 4:3 seems completely dead, and 16:10 seems diminishing.

I managed to get a Samsung 1920*1200 for work a year ago, and I'd like to get a 2560x1600 for home but they are still a bit pricy for me.
