Samsung has just announced that its Galaxy S II smartphone sold over 5 million units in its homeland market, South Korea.

The Android-based mobile phone was made available in the country about nine months ago, and proved one of the fastest selling handsets there. It is one of the very few mobile devices to reach such a milestone in South Korea.

Currently, Samsung is the leading vendor on the smartphone market in South Korea. The company accounted for 53 percent of the local market in 2011.

Galaxy S II is one of the most appealing Android-based devices that Samsung has brought to the market. The handset landed on shelves in the second quarter last year and managed to sell tens of millions of units all around the world.
