After exceeding the 5 million milestone globally, Samsung has announced that it has sold more than 2 million Galaxy S II smartphones in South Korea since its launch on the market.

Samsung's Android flagship smartphone sales surpassed any expectations, as the company announced that it took the phone only 73 days to top the 2 million milestone, while its predecessor, the original Galaxy S, needed almost double the amount of time (144 days).

It appears the success of the Galaxy series of handsets is one of the main reasons that Samsung became number 2 smartphone manufacturer in the world after Apple.

Samsung hopes that its highly-acclaimed Galaxy S II device will break the original Galaxy S past record of 3.2 million units sold in South Korea.

In celebration of the achievement, the Korean handset manufacturer launched four uniquely-designed battery covers for the smartphone.

Furthermore, the company announced that 4,000 Galaxy S II users in South Korea will have the chance to win one of the limited edition Galaxy S II battery covers for free.

Unveiled in February, at the 2011 Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona, Samsung Galaxy S II was launched on the market two months later, in April.

However, the phone has yet to make its debut in several countries and it was only recently introduced in North America.

Equipped with a dual-core 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A9 Exynos processor, complemented by a Mali-400MP GPU, the Galaxy S II is one of the most powerful smartphones available on the market.

It packs 16GB (32GB) of internal memory, 1GB of RAM and microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB, 8GB memory card included).

The smartphone comes with HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, as well as built-in GPS, Bluetooth 3.0 and microUSB 2.0 with USB On-the-go support.

Samsung Galaxy S II is powered by Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform with TouchWiz UI 4.0 on top.
