South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung has made available for download a new version of its S Pen SDK for Android.

The SDK was designed to provide developers with the possibility to come up with applications that take advantage of Samsung’s S Pen.

For those out of the loop, we should note that the S Pen was designed as an input device for Galaxy Note. Through the S Pen, a faster and more precise input is available when compared to what a finger or a stylus has to offer.

In fact, Samsung designed the S Pen so that it could be used as an actual pen to offer functionalities never available before for smartphones.

Through the S Pen SDK, developers can come up with applications that offer support for drawing and writing, as well as for animations.

The S Pen SDK 2.1 arrives with a wide set of enhancements over the previous flavors of the development tools, including new com.samsung.spen.lib.input package, com.samsung.spen.lib.image package, com.samsung.spen.applistener, and more.

The SDK can now distinguish between a touch with a finger or the S Pen, and it packs a new Hover Event for the S Pen on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

There is also a Side button status for compatibility, along with new image filter class, API, and a sample application which should enable easy image processing. The new SDK version also comes with new Pencil Sketch, Pastel Sketch, Mosaic images and a set of other image processing filters as well.

The new com.samsung.spen.applistener in the SDK offers structural improvements, with new and common listeners now being grouped in the package.

Other changes in the SDK include: - New TextSettingInfo class: Properties such as font, text size, text color, and alignment can be configured in each class and method, and can be applied to a CanvasView or SCanvasView.

- New features and improvements for the SCanvasView class: Signature recognition, a color picker, and rotation for image objects. Improved load and save speeds

- Unnecessary and duplicated APIs have been deprecated, and the names of some APIs have been changed. The deprecated methods are available in the current version (2.1), but will be removed in the future.

- Sample source code with new features has been added: Samples for Signature recognition, Using Image filters, S Pen Event Checking, Color Picker and more.
