In an unsurprising move, Samsung released the long-awaited Android 5.0 Lollipop update for Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 tablet. Details about Samsung working on this update emerged a few weeks ago, which makes today's news not so surprising, but appealing nonetheless.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 was announced about one year ago and made it to market in June. The slate ships with Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system right out of the box, but starting today owners will be able to upgrade to Lollipop.

According to YouMobile, Samsung is now rolling out Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update for Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 tablets. The upgrade is pushed OTA (over the air) in stages, which means that it might take some time until it reaches all Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 units.

There's no information on the size of the update, but you should probably need at least around 1GB of free storage space to upgrade to Lollipop.

It's also worth mentioning that your slate's battery should be at least 50% charged before attempting to install this update. Even though upgrading to Lollipop shouldn't erase any of your data, it's recommended to back up your media files before updating.

New TouchWiz UI and Material Design

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 owners will be pleased to know that the latest update will bring lots of new features and improvements for their tablets.

First of all, the update will add a new TouchWiz UI especially designed for tablets. In addition, Android 5.0.2 Lollipop brings Material Design, new Notifications panels and enhancements, as well as lockscreen improvements.

A better multi-tasking mode will be implemented as well, along with lots of bug fixes and overall performance improvements.

On a side note, Samsung is also working to bring Android 5.0 Lollipop to other Galaxy Tab 4 series slates, such as the 7-inch and 8-inch models. Unfortunately, there's no telling when exactly these will be released, but we'll keep an eye out for any additional details on the matter so stay tuned.
