Will Samsung and BlackBerry become one in 2015?

Canadian company BlackBerry has been struggling to maintain its business afloat, but even with new products on the market, its prospects are pretty gloomy.

So what usually tends to happen when a mobile manufacturer has problems with survival? It gets acquired by a larger company. We have seen this strategy play out before, when Microsoft purchased Nokia or when Lenovo snatched Motorola under its wing.

Well according to a report coming out from Reuters, Samsung wants to be the knight in shining armor for BlackBerry and save it from impending doom. Well not exactly, Samsung has its own agenda, of course.

Samsung and BlackBerry might become an item in 2015

According to a source familiar with the matter which remained unnamed, the Korean tech giant is mainly interested in BlackBerry’s beefy patent portfolio. The report also mentioned officials from both conglomerates met in private last week to discuss the potential acquisition.

Some numbers were also thrown in, as Samsung is said to have offered BlackBerry an initial price range of $13.35 to 15.49 / €11.34 to 13.15 per share, with the possibility of increasing the value of the stock by 38-60%.

BlackBerry’s enterprise worth should be around $6 to 7.5 billion / €5.1 to 6.37 and Samsung is willing to pay as much. The rumor had a tremendous effect on BlackBerry’s stock which jumped up to 30% already and now stands at $15.02 / €12.76 per share.

So maybe BlackBerry has chances of seeing a more generous offer from Samsung.

If the deal were to go through, Sammy would be taking control over a brand known for its business-friendly devices which comes with enhanced security systems and communication software.

BlackBerry says the acquisition rumors are bogus

Since the original Reuters report, BlackBerry has stepped forward to deny the rumors that have appeared in the media. The company said it has not met with Samsung to discuss a possible acquisition and declined to further comment on the matter.

So what do you think? Is BlackBerry trying to distract us from a major impending deal?
