A SGH-D820 on a diet

Some people may think of Samsung's D840 Ultra Edition handset as being the bigger brother of the mobile market's slimmest slider, the D900. However, it actually seems to be an upgrade to the older D820, the D840 I'm writing about being 3 mm slimmer.

It comes with a much better camera (2 megapixel compared to the 1 megapixel cam you can find on the D820) and also adds in some stereo Bluetooth spices.

The tri-band handset works on 900, 1800, 1900 MHz networks and comes with a superb 262k colors 2.12 inch TFT display, capable of displaying graphics at a resolution of 240x320 pixels. The cellphone has a music player with support for MP3, AAC, AAC+ and WMA audio files, a document viewer with Word, Excel, Powerpoint and PDF compatibility, the latest Java MIDP 2.0 technology, a WAP 2.0/xHTML browser, vCard, vCalendar, a PIM, TV output and a battery with a 250 hours standby.

The end of the spec sheet comes with a lot of goodies, the D840 also featuring a 2 megapixel digital camera with flash, video recording capabilities and a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels, USB 1.1, Bluetooth 1.2, EDGE and GPRS data transfer technologies, 70 MB of embedded memory and a microSD memory expansion cars slot waiting for you to expand the phone's storage space.

All these features and the ones mentioned above are crammed in a case made out of very light materials (magnesium and fiberglass infused plastic), with a nice metallic look, measuring 99 x 51 x 11.9 mm and weighing 100 grams.

This phone promises to be a more usable and thinner version of the E900, a phone that comes with real keys instead of the touch sensitive ones. Adding into the equation the 2 megapixel camera, the A2DP stereo Bluetooth profile and its slim body, the D840 is going to win a lot of hearts.

The device is going to be available from Vodafone, Orange and the Carphone Warehouse and the price tag will depend on the contract you're ready to sign with one of the carriers that will support it.
