Yet another Samsung device from CES is making the news, one that is more of a hybrid than anything else.
The SMART Hub is
reportedly a merger between a Wi-Fi router and an external DVD drive.
Its most basic function is to stream DVD and CD-stored movies to notebooks, ultrabooks, desktops, etc.
One might say that it can be very useful, as many mobile PCs have no optical drive of their own.
In addition to Wi-Fi, the SMART Hub has an USB port, through which a HDD or other storage device can be connected, after which the data on it can be accessed by a PC via the wireless connection.
Unfortunately, there are two so-called drawbacks: one is the lack of Blu-ray support and the other is the lack of battery (it has to be permanently plugged into a power outlet).
On the bright side, a special app (AllShare) can enable even tablets and smartphones to link to the SMART Hub, even backing up photos and other files automatically.
Alas, no pricing or availability details have been made public.
