Insiders claim Android 5.1 is still a project in the making

Even before the Galaxy S6 was made official, Samsung had given us a taste of full metal-clad smartphones by releasing the Galaxy A3, Galaxy A5, and later on, the Galaxy A7.

However, unlike the Galaxy S6, these phones were of the mid-range variety, coming with specs less advanced than Samsung’s newest flagships.

Samsung describes them as selfie-phones, putting a big emphasis on their capabilities as perfect self-portrait catchers.

However, the handsets were announced and shipped out with Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box. Since Samsung has started rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop for some of its smartphones, we assumed that after it was done updating the premium models, it would move on to the mid-range ones too.

The metal Galaxy A series will be updated to Android 5.0

It seems we were right to think so. A new report coming out of Sam Mobile claims that Samsung has started working on the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Galaxy A series.

Sources familiar with the matter have also said that Samsung has not yet begun developing the Android 5.1 for any of its devices, so if you were hoping to get a taste of what the Nexus family is experiencing right now, you’re probably in for quite a prolonged wait.

To be fair, the Android 5.1 update hasn’t been out for long, so we shouldn’t expect to see it arrive on non-Google devices too soon.

The same insiders have a bit of information related to the oldie but goldie Galaxy Note 2. Back in December last year, it was revealed that Samsung had plans to update this model to Android 5.0 Lollipop, albeit the phone is almost three years old.

It appears that the wait for owners of the Galaxy Note 2 is far from over. Sources claim that the update isn’t currently in development nor has it been mentioned. Hopefully, this doesn’t indicate that Samsung has given up on the idea of updating the handset.

Nevertheless, Sammy is currently working towards providing the update for its Galaxy Tab S AMOLED tablet duo. Back at MWC 2015, the slates were spotted with the build on top, so that means it shouldn't be long until the Korean tech giant kick-starts the rollout.
