South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung seems to be the first company to actually come to the market with a handset that features a 12-megapixel photo snapper. Soon after Sony Ericsson announced that its 12.1MP monster would become available for purchase in the fourth quarter of the ongoing year, Samsung steps up and says that it'll deliver the Samsung Pixon12 (M8910) with a 12-megapixel camera and full-touch capabilities as soon as this month.

According to the company, the new Samsung Pixon12 has been developed in accordance with customers' needs for robust camera features in their handsets, and will offer them the possibility to take fast snapshots, while also enabling them to browse and share their images on the go. Due to its close availability on the market, the handset becomes this way the first 12-megapixel camera phone in the world.

“The Pixon12 is testament to how Samsung’s ongoing consumer research enables us to develop ground-breaking products that do not just meet but surpass our customers’ expectations. Speedy access to the camera mode, fast shutter speed and quick browsing are some of the key factors consumers are looking for in their mobile phone cameras” said Executive Vice President JK Shin, head of Mobile Communication Division in Samsung Electronics.

What the new camera phone offers users in terms of photographic capabilities includes fast capture and fast image saving, the handset sporting about the same features as any of today’s advanced digital cameras, a Dedicated Camera Power Key, Touch Auto-Focus (AF) tracking (users can select a focus point and the camera maintains the focus even if the object moves across the screen), or Smart Auto, a feature that enables capturing the best shots.

The photo snapper on Pixon12 also features superb lens and Xenon flash, yet the capabilities of the device are not limited to its camera. It also sports a full-touch 3.1-inch AMOLED screen, which features a contrast ratio of 10,000:1, allows users to sort their images by tags, file names, ratings, and time, while also enabling them to upload photos directly on social networking sites like Facebook, Picasa, Flickr, MySpace, Photobucket or Friendster.

In addition, the Samsung Pixon12 comes with Wi-Fi and HSUPA capabilities, so that the photos are uploaded to the desired location in no time. According to the mobile phone maker, the device will become available for purchase in some European markets at the end of June, and will also go to other regions in August.
