Phone manufacturer Samsung has been granted a patent for an innovative hinge design that's to be used on a mobile device. With the help of the hinge, the handset can be opened in several directions. Judging solely from the picture, the handset to feature the hinge will be a smartphone.

Samsung would be one of the manufacturers able to equip a phone with such a hinge and still manage to keep the device at a reasonable size. Despite the fact that they are feature packed, most of the Korean manufacturer's handsets are exceptionally slim.

Samsung has also unveiled its plans to release 6 new smartphones throughout this year, claiming that there is an increasing demand for such devices in the professional and customer's segments. According to Samsung, their future smartphones will be equipped with high-resolution cameras and powered by Windows Mobile 6. Now, we've yet to see if any of them will sport the hinge that the Korean manufacturer has just been granted a patent for, or if we'll have to wait for the next set of phones to be released. The six smartphones will start shipping starting this summer.
