South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics unveiled the Samsung Omnia II to the world not too long ago, a high-end nice looking handset that runs under Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. The phone already reached the market with said version of the operating system on board, and now it is expected to make an appearance with the newer Windows Mobile 6.5 flavor pre-loaded on it.

Samsung already announced that the device would receive the update, and those of you who would like to see it running under the new OS should take a look at the video below. One thing that should be noted though is that the handset comes with Samsung's proprietary TouchWiz user interface, which changes completely the look and feel of the phone, like it doesn't even come with Windows Mobile 6.5 on board.

The UI touches do not stop only at the surface level, but have been applied even to the settings options and menus, and some applications are also modified a little by it. Not only does the Samsung Omnia II seem to be a very attractive handset, but the new Windows Mobile 6.5 loaded on it and the TouchWiz UI add even more flavor to the mix, that's for sure.

The one thing that remains to be seen when it comes to the Samsung Omnia II is when it will make an appearance on Verizon Wireless' network, and whether it will run under Windows Mobile 6.1, as rumored a few times before, or under 6.5, as one would expect. Hopefully, Big Red has delayed the phone's launch so as to deliver it with the newer OS flavor, though nothing is yet official on the matter.

Until more info becomes available, take a look at the video below to admire the Samsung Omnia II running under Windows Mobile 6.5 platform and displaying Samsung's TouchWiz UI. An entire series of screenshots with the handset's interface can be found here.

Samsung have done a SUPERB job of the usability and beauty of the OS UI. Unlike most other mere Today screen replacements, almost all the nasty MS WM UI has gone, replaced by beautiful finger-friendly screens. You have to dig really deep to get back to WM UI, for example when editing Connection settings.
At first I thought MS had done an outstanding job of improving WM 6.5. Sadly, they have not, and all the credit belongs to Samsung. (This is a real shame for MS because other manufacturers devices will retain the old clunky UI once you get past Today and Start).
