Today, South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics has officially announced the upcoming availability of the 6.3-inch Samsung Galaxy Mega smartphone on the market in the United States.

The handset should provide users with features and capabilities similar to those of tablet PCs, while still keeping smartphone portability, Samsung claims.

The new mobile phone comes with an HD Super Clear LCD (720 x 1280 pixels) display, a 1.7GHz dual-core processor inside, 1.5GB of RAM, and an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back.

"We continue to bring innovation with our Galaxy family of devices, with the Galaxy Mega representing a manifestation of consumer's enthusiasm for our thin, large screen designs," said Nick DiCarlo, vice president of product planning and marketing at Samsung Mobile.

"The Galaxy Mega combines exceptional features from the Samsung Galaxy smartphone family with a 6.3-inch screen, making it an optimal device for movies, books, music and games."

The smartphone arrives on the market with Google’s Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system loaded on top, as well as with the features and capabilities that Samsung’s latest high-end devices feature.

This means that users will be able to enjoy fast web navigation on the phone’s large touchscreen, as well as viewing of videos, composing emails, and the like.

Some of these features include Air View, Multi Window (for split screen multitasking), WatchON, and Easy Mode (it simplifies the home screen layout, camera, calendar, messaging and the internet browser for first-time users).

According to Samsung, its Galaxy Mega is also SAFE (Samsung for Enterprise), which means that users can be sure that their photos, emails and contacts are protected.

“Protect the Galaxy Mega with an assortment of cover options, such as the S-View Flip Cover, a specially designed flip cover with a clear window to answer or reject a call and view battery status,” Samsung also notes.

“The traditional Flip Cover provides similar functionality without a viewing window, and the Protective Cover + fits snugly around the Galaxy Mega to protect against bumps and falls. Sold separately, the S-View Flip Cover, Flip Cover and Protective Cover + come in a variety of vibrant colors to add personality and style, all while protecting the Galaxy Mega.”

The smartphone is set to land on shelves in the United States in two color flavors, namely Nova Black and Polaris White, and should go up for sale before the end of this month on the networks of AT&T, Sprint and US Cellular.
