Samsung’s range of Android cameras might not be the most popular, but this doesn’t mean the Korean tech giant is willing to give up on its photo business. On the contrary.

The NX1 mirrorless camera has been rumored for a while now and it caught our interest especially since it was said it would be 4K-ready.

Say hello to the Samsung NX1 compact mirrorless

Now, the camera has finally become official and it’s quite a beast. It’s clear that Samsung is hoping to make an impression on the pro market here, and who knows – the NX1 might be just the right way to do it.

The camera is a DSRL-style kind of device, maybe a tad smaller, coming with an electronic viewfinder. Samsung makes use of an OLED display that has a super-high resolution of 2,260k, which is pretty impressive.

The NX1 takes advantage of a new APS-C format CMOS sensor, but the perk is that it also takes advantage of back-illumination technology that’s characteristic of the compact camera market. In basic terms, this means that the camera will be able to capture more light.

The NX1 has a NX AF System III autofocus that allows photographers to take photos of their subjects regardless of the fact that they are moving quickly.

The AF Assist Beam allows photographers to better focus on subjects in low-light conditions by virtue of a light beam that can bounce off the subject up to 15 meters.

The sensor is one to take advantage of 28 million pixels, so we can say that camera offers one of the highest resolutions from the APS-C bunch.

Under the hood of the camera lies a new DRIMe V Image Processor, which Samsung says should bring about improved color reproduction and low noise levels, so pixelation shouldn’t be much of a problem for you.

Samsung NX1 is a 4K-ready camera

In the video department, the NX1 can shoot up to Ultra HD resolution and the output is stored on a memory card in HEVC H.265 codec. So the NX1 can shoot both 4K (3,840 x 2,160) at 30 frames per second and Ultra HD (4,096 x 2,160) at 24fps.

Surely, if you’re content with HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080) the camera can do that too, at 24, 30, or 60 fps.

When you're done, you can even stream your footage via Wi-Fi in case you are the owner of a Samsung Ultra HD TV.

When it arrives on the market, the Samsung NX1 will compete head to head with the 4K-capable Panasonic GH4, which has just received a firmware update and is a tad more expensive.

The camera has a $1,500 / €1,161 price tag for the body only version, but Sammy has also rolled out the NX 50-150mm F2.8S IOS lens, so you will need to spend more cash if you want those too.
