Omar Khan, CTO at Samsung Mobile, is leaving the company after bringing to the market a series of highly popular devices lately, including the Galaxy S and the Galaxy S II smartphones.

Apparently, he decided it was time for a change, and is leaving Samsung to take the lead of CitiGroup's global mobile initiatives.

This change comes as a hit for Samsung, as the company is facing increasing competition from rivals HTC and LG, but it seems that they will continue on the sale direction Omar Khan led them to until now.

In a recent article, The Droid Guy explains that Khan was the one to bring Samsung in the Android game, being there from the launch of Behold II to that the new Galaxy S II.

Samsung came up with Windows Phone devices as well, and also made important steps with bada, its own mobile operating system.

The company already came up with various bada and Windows Phone devices, and is expected to launch even more of them soon, including a Galaxy S II counterpart that would run under Microsoft's mobile OS.

“I wanted to let you know that I have decided to leave Samsung Mobile. I have really enjoyed working with you over the past few years representing Samsung Mobile and the mobile industry,” Khan said in a letter to TDG.

“Kim Titus and the Samsung PR team are best-in-class and will continue to work with you very closely. Additionally, Nick Dicarlo and Gavin Kim will be assuming most of the product and service spokesperson responsibilities for Samsung Mobile.

“I will be joining Citigroup next week where I will be leading their mobile solutions on a global basis. I look forward to connecting and working with you in the future as I work with the Citi team to build the world’s premier digital bank.”

For the time being, Samsung did not announce who will assume the role of CTO after Khan's launch. However, it might not be too long before the company makes the move, so stay tuned for more on this.
