Samsung is apparently working towards releasing a standalone smartwatch

The mythical iWatch has been in the rumor mill for a while now and from time to time we receive pieces of information detailing some of its “legendary” upcoming specs.

While Apple is trying to come up with a groundbreaking product, Samsung is spurting out smartwatches like there’s no tomorrow.

According to the latest info made available by SamMobile, the Korean tech giant has just filled a trademark in the US for a device called Gear S.

The Gear moniker indicates without much doubt that the product will most likely be a smartwatch. But what’s the S there for? Some of you might remember that a while back talk of the Samsung Gear Solo started making rounds online.

Unlike most smartwatches coming from brand vendors available on the market today, the Gear Solo is expected to be one of the first to arrive with phone-calling capabilities.

This means that the device could be used as a standalone smartphone and won’t need to be used in concert with your handset. Basically, it would be like having your fancy smartphone strapped to your wrist.

The idea has been toyed with by some startups, but so far nothing of the sort has been released on the market. However, we wonder what the appeal would be for such a minuscule smart device.

Anyway, Samsung is top dog if we think in terms of smartwatch launches. Back in 2013 at IFA, the Korean tech giant announced the original (and first) Galaxy Gear, which ran on standard Android.

The wearable didn't see a lot of success due to the absence of an app ecosystem and bulky design, but that didn't stop Sammy from trying again.

Only a few months later, the device manufacturer rolled out two more smartwatches, in the form of the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo (the Gear Fit smartband was also unveiled alongside them), which both ran on Sammy’s own Tizen platform.

In the meanwhile, the original Galaxy Gear also received an update that eradicated Android and brought in Tizen instead.

Then came the Google I/O, where Samsung’s Gear Live with Android Wear took a lot of the spotlight alongside the LG G Watch. Samsung appears to be continuing its tablet strategy with wearables – it has something to offer for every consumer niche out there.

So, if there’s somebody out there wanting a smartwatch with phone-calling capabilities, Samsung will oblige soon. As opposed to Apple, Samsung is willing to stretch itself upon many platforms in an effort to get as many customers onboard as possible. Do you think this is a good strategy?
