comScore, Inc., a leading company in the digital world, has just announced the release of a new report on the U.S. mobile phone industry during the third quarter of the ongoing year. The company places mobile phone maker Samsung at the top of the handset market in the country, while stating that BlackBerry remains the leading OS in the country.

Samsung was the leading handset vendor in the three moth's period ended September 30, 2010, with 23.5 percent market share.

On the mobile operating system area, Research In Motion's BlackBerry platform was the leader, with 37.3 percent market share.

“The report ranked the leading mobile original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and smartphone operating system (OS) platforms in the U.S. according to their share of current mobile subscribers ages 13 and older,” the company announced.

At the same time, comScore notes that the report also “reviewed the most popular activities and content accessed via the subscriber’s primary mobile phone.”

According to the said report, “234 million Americans ages 13 and older used mobile devices.”

Samsung managed to get on top of charts with 23.5 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers, gaining 0.7 percentage points when compared to the previous quarter.

Next in line was LG with 21.1 percent share, with Motorola on the third position with 18.4 percent share. RIM ended the time frame on the fourth place with 9.3 percent share, up 0.5 percentage points, while Nokia was placed on the fifth with 7.4 percent share.

When it comes to smartphones, 58.7 million people in the US had such a device in the quarter, marking an increase of 15 percent from the previous time frame.

According to comScore, RIM accounted for 37.3 percent share of U.S. smartphone subscribers, with Apple on the second position with 24.3 percent share.

Google's Android OS gained some more market share in the time frame, reaching 21.4 percent of smartphone subscribers, a 6.5 percent increase from the previous quarter.

“Microsoft accounted for 10.0 percent of smartphone subscribers, while Palm rounded out the top five with 4.2 percent. Despite losing share to Google Android, most smartphone platforms continue to gain subscribers as the smartphone market overall continues to grow,” the company added.
