Samsung Electronics Co. managed to hold yet for another month the first position on the global liquid-crystal display (LCD) market, says DisplaySearch, the global
display research institute. The company registered $1.8 billion in sales during June, which translated into a 26.2 percent of the total LCD sales worldwide. This is the 38th month for Samsung holding on to the first position.
25.4 million large-sized panels were shipped by Samsung during the second quarter of the year, registering an 11.4 percent rise from the first quarter and going up 32 percent compared to the same period one year earlier. According to the company, its positive results came from a steady notebook and TV panel demand, although the second quarter is considered to be a slow season. Also, its representatives said that the focus on premium products, which are specialized by wider panels and higher definition, added to the nice performance.
"We should be able to expand our lead, with our eight-generation production lines meeting stable demand and expectations for an increase of sales in the second half on seasonal factors," Samsung Electronics explained.
The results for different areas of the overall market show that the notebook segment registered 14 percent of the entire LCD panel market, the same proportion recorded during the first quarter of the year. DisplaySearch data indicates that the TV panel segment accounted for 55 percent of the market during the second quarter, going up three percent in comparison with the precedent quarter.
The notebook panel shipments are expected to increase by 14 percent during the second half of the year, up from the 67 million panels shipped during the first half. Also, TV panel shipments should go up by 16 percent during the same period to a total of 121 million units for the entire year. According to DisplaySearch, the third quarter should mark total shipments of 32 million panels, while in the fourth, shipments are forecast to rise to 33 million panels.
