Samsung is well versed in the display technology, so it comes as no wonder that the company is trying to bring innovative products on the market.

Those who attended Samsung Display’s press conference at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013 probably remember some of the exciting stuff the South Korean company showcased.

Foldable and rollable displays, as well as so-called “bent” smartphones, which basically feature three-sided displays, were among the most innovative devices presented last year by Samsung.

Although those products were showcased as futuristic technology, they might turn into reality sooner than we had initially thought, Korea Herald reports.

“The bent smartphones will be rolled out as a Galaxy variant with a few million units at the end of this year, initially taking aim at the niche market,” said Song Jong-ho, an analyst at Seoul-based KDB Daewoo Securities in an interview for Korea Herald.

Samsung has already launched the world’s first curved smartphone, the Galaxy Round, but the company wasn’t prepared for a worldwide release of such a device, which is why the handset is only available in a few countries.

LG G Flex is currently the only flexible smartphone that will soon be available in every major market in the world. The huge device is proof that Samsung has competition on the display market.

However, getting a foldable display on the market is much harder, which is why we think that Samsung is going to take things slow in that direction.

The next innovative device that Samsung plans to release is the bent smartphone, which will pack a three-sided display. This is much easier to put into a handset than a completely foldable screen.

The main reason seems to be the fact that Samsung still has a lot to innovate in the battery technology field, which is not on par with the company’s advancements in the display technology.

“The bent device is the first step toward testing the market and gauging how it would react to its foldable smartphones that are to be unveiled in the second half of next year,” concluded Song of KDB, adding that the foldable phone would be the next Samsung flagship phone.

And to top it off, Kwon Oh-hyun, Samsung Electronics vice chairman, has recently confirmed that his company will unveil its foldable display in 2015.
