Mid-end Samsung handsets that look good

Two of Samsung's latest mid-end mobile phones, the L700 and J800, were spotted in live images, allowing us to make a better impression on what the handsets have to offer to end users. Both of them have recently been presented in Singapore by the South Korean manufacturer.

Samsung L700 is an elegant handset that comes in a candybar form factor and, at first sight, it might appear as a high-end device. But L700's specs are a bit far from being high-end, especially if we mention its display, which only has a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. Knowing this, the screen's 2.1 inches and 256K colors don't matter that much.

Besides this rather basic display, the L700 also comes with quad-band GSM as well as HSDPA connectivity, a 2 Megapixel photo camera with flash and video recording, Bluetooth 2.0, Web and email capabilities, Music player, FM radio, front-facing camera for video calls, document viewer and 30MB of expandable memory. The handset only measures 109 x 46 x 12.8 millimeters, hence it easily falls into the "slim" category.

Starting July, the L700 (which shares its name with a digital photo camera also released by Samsung) will be available in Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, in three color versions: silver, gold and purple. No pricing details yet.

Unlike the L700, Samsung J800 comes in a slider form factor. In terms of features, however, the J800 is not too different from the slim candybar. The slider packs tri-band GSM connectivity plus HSDPA, a 2.2 inch TFT display with 256K colors and 176 x 220 pixels, Media player, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, FM radio, Web browser (HTML), email, document viewer, a 2 Megapixel camera with video, secondary video-call camera, 18MB of internal memory and microSD card slot, in the (most probable) case that you need more storage space.

When closed, the J800 measures 99.5 x 47 x 15 millimeters and I have to admit that, overall, it looks really nice (for a mid-end phone, of course). The slider will soon be available across Asia, Europe, Africa and South America, coming for an estimated retail price of less than $400 (255 Euros).
