Even though MeeGo's days as a smartphone operating system are numbered, the folks at Samsung have started to use this OS for building inexpensive netbooks for emerging markets and one such model, the N100, was recently announced in India.

At the heart of Samsung's new mobile computer stands the recently launched Atom N435 processor which is Intel's slowest Atom Pine Trail CPU to be released until now, as it features a single processing core clocked at 1.33GHz and just 512KB of L2 cache.

Samsung has decided on using this chip in order to get the price of the N100 as low as possible, and this can also be observed in the rest of the netbooks configurations as it includes only 1GB of system memory and a smallish 250GB hard drive.

All these are packed inside a special case that was designed to withstand the usual bumps and scratches that occur during day to day use and that weights no more than 1.02Kg (including a 3-cell battery).

As far as connectivity is concerned, we get to see all the usual ports and connectors that are included on such a low-cost machine. While not impressive, the list does include features such as a multi-format card reader, a VGA output and two USB ports.

The LED backlit display used in the N100 also isn't noting out of the ordinary as it feature a 10.1-inch diagonal and a resolution of 1024x600 pixels, but at least it comes with an anti-reflective finish, which should provide good legibility in heavily lit environments.

The Samsung N100 netbook is available right now for purchase in the Indian market for Rs. 12,290, which translates into roughly $276 US.

Apart from MeeGo, users can also configure the netbook with the Windows 7 operating system or with FreeDOS. (via SammyHub)
