About 45 percent more power efficient than other drives

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a leading provider of digital consumer electronics and information technology solutions, announced the introduction of its EcoGreen F2EG hard disk drive, which is able to provide users with 1.5TB of storage capacity with 500GB per disk. At the same time, the company also stated that the HDD featured an increased recording density, as well as a reduced number of disks, which allowed it to be more power efficient while supporting 1.5TB on only 3 disks.

“Lower platter count means less power to start the motor, less power to continuously spin the motor and a lighter head-stack which takes less power to seek,” said Andy Higginbotham, director of HDD sales and marketing for the Samsung Semiconductor Storage Division. “With fewer heads and disks, the F2EG hard drive has a lower probability of head-disk failures, enabling customers to build more reliable systems.”

As many of you already know, the capacity of the hard disk rises along with the number of platters, yet so does the energy consumption. The new Samsung F2EG comes with low-power requirements, given the use of EcoTriangle, a low-power, low-heat, low-noise operation technology. The advanced design and smaller number of components allow F2EG to offer 40 percent lower power consumption while idle, as well as 45 percent more power efficiency when operating, compared to competitive solutions.

Samsung also states that its Eco-Triangle technology is able to provide more energy efficient and high performance hard drive options for manufacturers of either home media PCs, external HDDs, set-top boxes, or personal NAS. In addition, the new F2EG drive complies with the European Union (EU)’s Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) Regulations, as well as with other environmental regulations.

The Samsung EcoGreen F2EG drive can be used for both desktop PCs and external hard disks and includes 500GB/1TB/1.5TB capacities and 16MB/32MB buffer memory, as well as a 3.0 gigabytes per second (Gbps) Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) interface. The company also states that the drive is able to improve the transfer performance. The new F2EG family of drives is available for an MSRP of $149.00. The maker also announced it would be shipped to major OEM businesses.
