Sources in Asia are reporting that Samsung, after hearing that Apple is considering to launch larger tablets, is now “developing tablets with a 12-inch or larger display.”

“Samsung is reportedly developing tablets with a 12-inch or larger display echoing rumors that Apple reportedly has similar plans,” according to DigiTimes, citing unnamed sources in the tech industry.

The Taiwanese trade publication often claims to have information from various part suppliers, but is seldom accurate. Nonetheless, we are posting this tidbit for the purpose of discussion.

The sources are reportedly from “the upstream supply chain,” where access to prototype hardware is common. These sources reportedly believe “the vendors are trying to create a new market segment to get away from competition from small-size devices.”

The same sources cautioned that such a move “could impact demand for conventional notebooks,” which is true. Hence it’s very unlikely that Apple will want to hurt sales of its expensive MacBook Airs by introducing a cheaper, yet larger, experimental iPad.

Samsung, on the other hand, won’t have a problem with that.
