Samsung is a company that usually offers a product for every niche. But in the 2-in-1 hybrid department, the company is lagging behind the competition.

Well, this might not be the case for long. Earlier this month, the US Patent & Trademark office published a new patent in which a notebook with a flexible hinge design is outlined (as seen at Patently Mobile).

Taking a look at the sketches contained in the patent, we’re shown a system for connecting the tablet to the keyboard which we haven’t seen before.

The hinge looks like a mini-spine which can be flexed in various directions. However, the system still seems quite capable of keeping the display part into place.

Given the fact that the patent was initially filled in the first quarter of the year, it’s safe to assume Samsung had enough time to develop the device.

So who knows, maybe the Korean behemoth is looking to surprise us with a new Android or Windows notebook that ditches the traditional hinge we have seen in most 2-in-1 devices in order to take this alien spine-line mechanism.

Since Samsung is expected to hold a press event before IFA 2014 starts in Berlin next week, we could speculate that the device maker will bring along the new 2-in-1. This is just speculation, so take it with a grain of salt.
