Transfer speeds can reach an impressive 500Mb/s

Introduced at the beginning of August, Samsung's 830 series solid state drives, the company's first SSDs to feature a SATA 6Gbps controller, has now finally become available in retail with Amazon US listing all four of the drives on its Website.

The SSDs are available as part of a desktop kit or a laptop kit, but no matter the type of system meant to be installed in, the drives are bundled together with the Norton Ghost 15 software.

This provides users with a quick migration path to their new Samsung SSD as the initial drive can be cloned and its contents transferred to the 830.

Outside of the easy migration path, the most important strength that the 830 has over other SSDs in the market right now is the high performance it can deliver as this SATA 6Gbps solution can reach read transfer speeds up to 500MB/s.

Samsung had to introduce two major changes in the 830 series SSDs in order to achieve these impressive speeds.

The first one is of course the support for the SATA 6Gbps interface, while the latter is the introduction of 2x-nm Toggle NAND Flash support, which will also help drive prices down similarly to what Intel has experienced when it switched to 25nm IMFT Flash.

At the heart of the 830 drives still stands a proprietary Samsung controller with support for AES 256-bit encryption and featuring the same reliability that made a large series of OEMs, including Apple, to stick with the previous generation 810.

Furthermore, the maximum sequential write speed listed by Samsung for the 830 is set at an impressive 350MB/s.

Samsung’s SATA 6Gbps SSDs are available in 512GB, 256GB, 128GB and 64GB densities with prices starting at $136.99 (99 Euros) and going all the way up to $784.99 (568 Euros).
