Samsung is preparing next-gen AMOLED tablets

As we have previously told you, Samsung is busy working towards bringing on the market the successors of the Galaxy Tab S lineup of AMOLED slates.

That’s pretty good news since we haven’t seen anything come out of the Korean tech giant in terms of tablets since IFA 2014, when the company pushed out the Galaxy Tab Active device. Which wasn't really mind blowing, given the fact that the tab is just a rugged version of the 8-inch Galaxy Tab 4.0.

Anyway, if you are wondering what the next-gen Galaxy Tab S lineup of devices will be all about, the folks at Sam Mobile have managed to get their hands on the tabs’ specification lists.

Like with the original Galaxy Tab S family, the new generation of Galaxy Tab S slates will have similar configurations, albeit sporting different form factors (8-inch and 9.7-inch).

According to the report, the new tablets will offer 4:3 aspect ratio on Super AMOLED. Curiously enough, the resolution has gone down from 2,560 x 1,600 pixels to 2,048 x 1,536 pixels, although to be fair, the differences won’t be all that big to the naked eye.

Moving on, Samsung is apparently planning to use an Exynos 5433 processor, which is a bit disappointing considering the Galaxy S6 will be powered by the Exynos 7420 beast instead.

Even so, there’s a chance that Samsung will upgrade the processor at some point, especially since the tablets will don Android 5.0.2 out of the box, which supports the whole 64-bit affair, something the Exynos 5433 lacks.

Other specs include an 8MP/2.1MP camera combo, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of in-built storage (expandable to 128GB via microSD) and Cat.6 LTE (up to 300 Mbps download speeds) via Samsung’s in-built LTE modem.

The new AMOLED slates will live off 3,580 mAh and 5,870 mAh batteries, respectively. Their measurements indicate they will be quite sleek and extremely thin, just like the first generation.

The 8-inch model measures 198.2 x 134.5 x 5.4 mm / 7.7 x 5.27 x 0.21 inches and weighs 260 g / 0.58 lbs, while the 9.7-inchers comes in at 237.1 x 168.8 x 5.4 mm / 9.2 x 6.6 x 0.21 inches and 407 g / 0.89 lbs.

In terms of design, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 2 duo is said to arrive boasting a metallic frame. We don’t know whether that implies that the back will be made of metal too or not, so we’ll just have to wait and see until Samsung makes the devices official.

We were hoping for a more consistent hardware upgrade compared to earlier versions, but a lot can change before the slates actually go live. On the plus side of things, Sammy will make things a little bit better in terms of design, so that's something to look forward to.
