According to a tweet from Samsung Firmware

Google's Android operating system reached version 2.1 at the beginning of the ongoing year, as soon as the first handset to run under it arrived on the market, namely Nexus One, and it seems that more and more existing phones are expected to receive an update for the OS running on them. Samsung's Galaxy Spica is one such device and, even if the reports are suggesting it will enjoy Android 2.0 in the near future, it still sounds as better than nothing.

According to a recent tweet from Samsung Firmware (via Engadget), an Android 2.0 update is being prepared for the device, and users should expect it to land as soon as next month, February. Interestingly enough, while they mention Galaxy Lite as being the intended receiver (aka Galaxy Spica), they only say that Samsung Galaxy, Spica's older brother, might receive the update.

We've already seen that Twitter messages do not count as official statements at all times, and the same might apply to the Android 2.0 announcement for Galaxy Spica too. However, the handset is a great Android phone, one should agree, and it was expected for quite some time to receive an OS update, which means that Samsung might have stepped into it in the end and that this might indeed pan out.

As many of you might already know, the Android-based Samsung Galaxy Spica has just made its debut in the United States, after being launched in Europe a few months ago. The South Korean handset vendor brought the phone with it at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week, and US Android users have now yet another appealing device to choose from. Galaxy Spica sports a 3.2-inch HVGA display and a fast 800-MHz processor, which means that the Android 2.0 platform should run pretty well on it, adding something extra to its appeal. Keep an eye on this space to learn when the OS update for Spica is released into the wild.
