Canadian mobile phone carrier Rogers is reportedly gearing up for the launch of yet another appealing device powered by Google's Android operating system, namely the Samsung Galaxy Spica. Nothing is official for the time being, but it seems that the carrier already started to deliver Rogers branded Galaxy Spica dummy phones to its retail locations, which means that the launch might be near.

According to a recent post on MobileSyrup, the new Android-based Samsung Galaxy Spica is expected to become available for purchase in about two to three weeks from now, but nothing is certain and details on its price tag lack as well. However, the device is already available at Bell, which sells it for $49.95 upon the signing of a three-year contract agreement, and Rogers might have it priced in the same range.

The specifications list for Samsung Galaxy Spica shows a 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen display that boasts a 320 x 480 pixel resolution, a 3.2-megapixel photo snapper with video recording capabilities, an 800MHz processor inside, a 3.5mm headset jack, speakerphone, Wi-Fi connectivity, microUSB port, and built-in GPS receiver.

At the same time, the handset sports a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space, measures 115 x 57 x 13.2 mm and weighs in at 124 grams. The mobile phone runs under Google's Android 1.5 operating system, but it is expected to receive an update to a newer flavor of the platform, possibly Android 2.0, which might arrive even before it lands at Rogers, it seems.

As most of you might already know, the Samsung Galaxy Spica is the successor of Samsung's first Android-based device, the Galaxy. However, the company chose to update only the Galaxy Spica to a newer flavor of the Android operating system, while the older Galaxy will only receive an update to Android 1.6. Canada will get the handset with an updated OS it seems, something that will make the phone quite appealing on the market.
